Emergency Tarp and Wind Damage Repair in Woodbridge, NJ

A nor'easter stripped shingles from a Woodbridge home's exposed slope overnight. We tarped the opening the same day, returned for a permanent shingle and underlayment repair, and documented the damage for the homeowner's insurance claim.

The problem
The call came in during a March wind event with sustained gusts across Middlesex County. A section of shingles had lifted and torn off an exposed gable slope, leaving underlayment shredded and decking visible, and rain was forecast to continue into the next day. In that situation the first job is not the repair — it is stopping water from entering the structure before the interior damage multiplies, and doing it in a way that can survive continued wind rather than a tarp thrown over a ridge with a few bricks.
What the inspection found
- — Approximately eighty square feet of shingles missing on the windward gable slope, with underlayment torn away
- — Decking exposed but structurally sound with no delamination or rot
- — Creased shingles extending well beyond the visible opening — damaged fasteners though tabs remained in place
- — Drip edge bent and pulled loose along six feet of the rake edge
- — Attic insulation wet in the bay directly below the opening; no ceiling penetration yet
What we did
Same-day response was a properly battened tarp: the tarp was run over the ridge, wrapped on furring strips, and screwed down through the strips into the deck so the fasteners are sandwiched and the wind cannot lift an edge. That held through the remainder of the storm. On the return visit we removed the tarp and every creased shingle beyond the obvious damage — creased tabs will fail in the next wind event even though they look intact — installed ice-and-water shield over the exposed deck section, and re-laid matched architectural shingles tied into the existing courses. The bent rake drip edge was replaced. Wet attic insulation was removed and the bay left open to dry before new insulation went in. Throughout, we photographed the damage, the extent of the creasing, and the repair, and provided the set to the homeowner in a format their insurer could work from.

The result
The house was dried in within hours of the call, before the second band of rain arrived, and no water reached the finished ceiling below. The permanent repair covered the full extent of the wind damage rather than only the visibly missing section, which is the difference between one repair and a repeat call after the next storm. The photo documentation supported the homeowner's claim without a second inspection visit.
