Flat Roof Drainage: Why Ponding Water Ends Roofs Early
If water is still standing two days after the rain stopped, the membrane is not your biggest problem.

The 48-hour rule
Low-slope roofing is designed to drain, not to hold water. The industry benchmark is that a roof should be clear within 48 hours of rainfall ending. Water still standing after that accelerates membrane degradation, magnifies UV damage, adds structural load, and turns any minor seam defect into an active leak.
Why roofs pond
- Blocked or undersized drains — the most common and cheapest to fix
- Drain bowls set above the surrounding deck plane, so a puddle always remains
- Deck deflection between joists on older buildings
- Insulation installed without tapered slope toward the drains
- Later additions such as equipment curbs that dam the natural flow path
- Scuppers set too high at the parapet
How ponding is corrected

Clear and inspect drainage
Strainers, sumps, and internal leaders. Frequently this alone resolves it.

Reset drain elevations
Lowering a drain into a proper sump so the low point actually drains.

Tapered insulation
Crickets and tapered packages that build slope toward the drains during a re-roof.

Add drainage capacity
New drains or scuppers where the existing count cannot handle the area.
Watch out
Coating a ponding roof does not fix it
Silicone tolerates standing water better than acrylic, but no coating corrects a drainage defect. Restoring a ponding roof without addressing slope resets the clock and nothing else.
